Data Security: Safeguarding Your Cardholders

Mark MacCarthy
Senior Vice President, Global Public Policy at Visa, Inc.

Please join us on May 12 at the Greenbelt Marriott for the monthly MACUMA meeting. Mark MacCarthy, Senior Vice President, Global Public Policy at Visa Inc. will review the payment card industry data security standard, its history, motivation and current form.  Mr. MacCarthy will discuss some key requirements including protecting stored data and not saving authentication codes.  He will include current compliance efforts by Visa.  Finally, MacCarthy will relate these private sector efforts to various data security bills at the state and federal levels.

In his current position at Visa Inc., Mark MacCarthy is responsible for global government relations, strategies and initiatives affecting electronic commerce, technology policy, information security, privacy, risk management, credit, debit and prepaid payment cards and innovative products such as payWave. MacCarthy joined the Visa management team in June 2000 and regularly represents Visa before the U.S. Congress, the U.S. Administration, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, the U.S. federal financial regulators and multi-governmental groups such as the OECD and APEC.

Mr. Robert Kenney, Partner at Birch, Stewart, Kolasch & Birch, LLP will join us for the afternoon educational session. Mr. Kenney will discuss how trademark rights are obtained; the factors relevant to selecting strong trademarks; distinguishing between two potentially similar marks; and clearance searching for proposed trademarks and service marks. In addition, he will review the costs and procedures for registering and maintaining trademarks and service mark registrations and steps for policing trademark rights against other parties. The discussion will include practical tips for avoiding common trademark problems and will allow for questions and answers.
